The Easiest Way To Build A New Habit

There is a quote by John C.Maxwell that I really love. He says, “You will never change your life until you change something you do daily.” I’d like to interpret this as, “If you want to change you life, change something you do daily.”

When there’s a new habit which I want to add to my daily routine, I do it with joy for a while but I have a difficulty making time for it after a few days. After a while this positive habit which I normally do with great joy starts to feel like a burden. I feel guilty if I’m not able to do it. On a calm day, it’s easy to make it a part of my routine but on a busy day it’s the first activity I throw out the window.

What should we do if we want to add something to our daily routine? More importantly how can we avoid that it gets cancelled after 3-5 days because “I don’t have time maybe I’ll do it on a period which is more calm”. The most important thing to notice is that we have a certain capacity and limited time in our hands. This means, whatever we’re doing everyday right now, takes us a whole day to finish. If we want to add new things to the list, we must either give up on something or we must give it less of our time.  Trying to do everything every day will throw us off balance and in time it will decrease our productivity.

Whatever habit we’re trying to build, to be able to do it every day, we need to make a place for it in our lives. This means we need to give up some thing/s we like. Let’s remember whatever sacrifice we make will later turn out to be a gift for us. What else would we want? 🙂
